Reference Photo Tips

choosing photos

As a portrait artist I have specific requirements for the digital reference photos I use. It’s important for me to see all the beautiful details in order to sketch them accurately.

To help with this process, I have created additional tips when sourcing photos. The images you select should showcase a specific cherished sweet look or expression. Imagine a white background and consider the overall composition of the face.

Based on what you’re able to provide I will partner with you to share my thoughts, feedback and recommendations.

What to look for

  • Photos taken at eye level often works best — prevents possible distortion /foreshortening

  • Up close & in focus — if I can see it I can draw it

  • Sitting or standing up — anything else the face gets distorted

  • No added filters or cropped images — I don’t feel comfortable making up those endearing details\

  • No back lit images or harsh shadows —I can’t change the direction of the light source

  • Avoid harsh flash photos. Natural light is always best.

I can attempt to edit your digital photo however these would only be minor changes.
